bill which, if passed, would prohibit any state college or university in Florida from recognizing a lesbian and gay student organization.

The bill grew out of an attempt by a student at Polk Community College (PCC) in Winter Haven to gain recognition for a lesbian and gay coalition.

The student, John Wall, was unsuccessful until February 20, when the U.S. District Court in Tampa issued a restraining order granting full rights to the group for 10 days. The order may be extended until a final hearing or until persons involved reach an agreement.

The suit, filed February 12 by Wall and his attorneys, David Slaughter and Jere Fishback, charged the school's refusal to grant recognition denied Wall the right to free speech and assembly.

After four months of waiting, Wall expects the coalition to provide counseling and "accurate" information about lesbian and gay life because, as he put it, "there are a lot of people, who

The picture on the cover is a publicity photograph of Charles "Buddy" Rogers from around 1930. Rogers is probably most widely known for having starred in the motion picture Wings and for being the loyal and loving husband of Mary Pickford from 1937 until her recent death.

The phrase "America's Sweetheart" would not be inappropriate for Rogers himself. His looks are noted for having been accompanied by a sweet, kindly and modest disposition. Despite having lived around back-biting Hollywood for over 50 years, no one seems to have ever said anything against him as a person.

An article by David Morris in the March 7 issue of Gay Community News reports that a meeting took place on February 25 between the fraternity, Dean Robert Halfman, and Kyle Hoeper, vice president of Gays at MIT. After the meeting the fraternity delivered a letter of apology to the gay organization.

Said the letter, "We hope that you will accept this apology for we don't want to be perceived as disrespectful of personal dignity."

"We would like to stress that no serious attack was intended on the gay community."

The letter said that the initiation was modeled on those of previous years and cited last year's initiation which had featured a pro-draft rally.

Said the letter. "The presentation is intended to be so blatently reactionary as to obviously be a farce. We realize that our error this year was in picking an issue which attacked a specific group of people rather than an abstract cause. In retrospect, it was obviously insensitive and tasteless."

The initiation prank began on February 20, a Friday, with fraternity members placing severed

lamb's heads at four different campus locations together with the leaflet signed by the fictitious Capital Punishment for Homo sexuals Society.

One of the lamb's heads and copies of the leaflet were found in the women's rest room at MIT across the hall from the bulletin board of Gays at MIT.

The following day 15 fraternity members were seen in nearby Central Square and in Harvard Square passing out the leaflets and shouting anti-gay slogans through bullhorns. Some, according to onlookers, were intoxicated. The 15 fraternity members wore plastic penises on their noses.
